Growth of Online Dating Industry Slows

A Dublin - Research and Markets report shows that the growth of the online dating industry is slowing down after experiencing record growth of 73% in 2002 and 77% in 2003. Growth of the online dating industry slowed to only 19% in 2004 and is expected to drop to 9% growth this year. According to the report:

“With fewer users browsing online personals, dating sites have focused on increasing conversions of viewers into paying subscribers in order to keep growing. Industry-wide conversion rates have increased approximately 25% in the last year. Many dating sites are also looking to serious daters, those users hoping to find long-term relationships or marriage, to increase revenues.”

In addition, the report found that serious daters present an attractive opportunity for personals sites, these users convert 20% more often, are twice as likely to purchase long-term subscriptions and pay up to twice as much per month as casual daters.

Finding Love Through an Animal Attraction

Heather McLean and Chris Murphy can't wait to see "Must Love Dogs" this weekend, the major motion picture starring Diane Lane and John Cusack. Like Sarah Nolan (Lane's character) and Jake Anderson (Cusack's character), Heather and Chris were brought together by the seemingly unlikely combination of dogs and online dating.

Heather, a 36-year-old divorced woman from St. Louis with two dogs, had never even considered trying online dating before she read a local newspaper article that mentioned AnimalAttraction.com, an online dating site created specifically for pet lovers.

She immediately thought, "Wouldn't it be nice to meet some guys who LOVE dogs, instead of guys who ARE dogs!"

A few days after joining, she met Chris, a 37-year-old single guy from the Raleigh/Durham area in North Carolina. Like Heather, Chris had also read about AnimalAttraction.com in a local paper. He had given up on other dating sites, thinking that they simply didn't deliver on their promises, but decided that meeting other pet lovers could be different.

"I spent a few months making friends in the chat rooms, but didn't uncover any romantic prospects, until one day Heather popped up in there and we chatted until the wee hours of the morning. A few weeks, phone calls and emails later, we decided to actually meet so I flew to St. Louis to meet Heather, Toby (Heather's 7-year-old Rottweiler) and Tootsie (Heather's 4-year old-mutt)," Murphy stated.

"Toby approached Chris barking, like he usually does with men, but Chris just stood there and in the nicest voice kept saying hi to him and telling him it was ok," said Heather. "Within a few minutes Toby went into 'pet me' mode and seemed to fall in love with Chris. That Chris was both confident and kind with Toby immediately told me he was a strong and caring man, which was very attractive to me. After a wonderful four-day weekend, we decided to move in together. Since June, Chris, and I, and his dog Yuki, and my dogs have been living happily together and we're all looking forward to a long, healthy relationship, thanks to AnimalAttraction.com."

This type of happy ending is exactly what Dan Cohen, Founder of AnimalAttraction.com envisioned when he launched the site in May of 2004. Cohen, 36, is an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and former vice president of sales for the Washington Redskins football team. He's also the proud owner of Buddy, a 1 and 1/2 year old Shepherd/Rottweiler mix, and knows firsthand the passion of pet lovers.

"Pet lovers are warm, caring and responsible people and whether you're looking for a friend, a date, or a long term relationship, those are great qualities to have," says Cohen. "We're thrilled to see 'Must Love Dogs' bringing to the national spotlight what we, and our tens of thousands of members, have been preaching for more than a year now: that pet lovers are a special breed and they deserve a place to connect with one another that was created especially for them."

98% of Single Men Want a Long Term Relationship

According to U.S. Census data, the number of never-married, eligible single men between the ages of 30 and 34 has increased dramatically. Thirty-three percent of men in this age group have never been married, compared to just 9 percent in 1970. A recent study of single men, conducted by Match.com and unveiled in the August issue of Marie Claire, shows that while more single men may be delaying marriage, 98 percent indicate that they are looking for a long-term relationship.
Identified in Marie Claire magazine as the Ben Jones phenomenon -- the male counterpart to Bridget Jones -- the research reveals that this new breed of bachelor is attractive, smart, successful and in search of Ms. Right.

The survey of more than 1001 single men in the United States aged 26 to 36 showed that 94 percent say they're ready to balance both a serious relationship and a career, and more than half say they believe in love at first sight.

"We know that the 'Ben Jones' bachelors are looking to settle down, but what they don't want to do is settle," said Kristin Kelly, dating expert for Match.com. "Our research found that these amazing single guys contribute to charity, they aren't threatened by a woman who earns more than they do, and they value friendship and kindness as the ultimate attributes in a potential romantic partner."

In addition to the Match.com survey results, Marie Claire magazine features 50 fabulous single men all matching the "Ben Jones" description -- and all of them looking for Ms. Right. "These guys are the perfect match for the Marie Claire reader, whose average age is 30," says Lesley Jane Seymour, editor-in-chief of Marie Claire. "Plus, the Ben Joneses have been carefully selected by the Marie Claire staff for the right amount of brains, brawn, soul, and sincerity." The first 25 bachelors are featured in the August issue on stands now, and the remaining 25 will be featured in the September issue.

"For more than a decade, Match.com has redefined the way people meet and fall in love," Kelly said. "Every day, thousands of Ben Jones bachelors -- including many of the 50 finalists featured in Marie Claire -- log on to Match.com to expand their romantic possibilities and find love. They're just a click away." Seymour agrees, "Everyone I know is meeting someone online."

Match.com survey highlights:
